/// VERTIGO: FAREWELL BUT NOT FORGOTTEN ///
Wednesday, 10th February, 7pm
The Horse Hospital Colonnade (just behind Russell Square Tube
Station), Bloomsbury, WC1
Dear friends and fellow travellers, As you may know, Vertigo magazine is finally closing after 16 years charting independent, innovative, imaginative and internationalist moving image work in all its forms across the world. We close reluctantly, with many dedicated supporters – readers, writers, makers – but without the necessary financial assistance to continue and develop, despite numerous extended negotiations.
Eventually we aim to produce a book exploring the work Vertigo has charted. Firstly, however, we will host a farewell party to celebrate what has been achieved over the years in both the magazine and its numerous events / screenings. We will be at The Horse Hospital near Russell Square from 7pm on 10th February and plan an evening of suitably independent world music from DJ Leon Parker, shortfilms and readings by a number of our esteemed contributors.
We look forward to seeing you there.
Thank You! The Vertigo Team http://www.vertigomagazine.co.uk

/// SOLIDARITY WITH ANARCHIST PRISONER IN TURKEY ///
Saturday, 13th February, 1.30pm
On 6th January 2010 the police arrested 23 people in Ankara (Turkey) by using brutal force. The arrests occurred during a demonstration and press conference for the immediate release of the imprisoned military objector Enver Aydemir. One person among the arrested demonstratorshas been detained: our comrade and anarchist Volkan Sevinc has been in jail for 40 days. We protest the imprisonment of Volkan Sevinc as well as the planned conviction of 19 other comrades to prison sentences between 1-10 years on the indictment “discouragement of the people from doing military service”. We?re going to meet on Saturday, 13 February 2010 simultaneously in Ankara and Istanbul as not yet convicted, killing-refusing antimilitarists to do another demonstration with the aim of “discouraging people of doing military service”. We invite all comrades worldwide to join us in protesting against the fact that the lives of people who oppose killing are transformed into a prison, and the fact that they are imprisoned and tortured. We invite all refusers, antimilitarists and anarchists to protest the state and its institutions by doing demonstrations and actions on 13 February 2010, for example in front of the consulates / embassies of the Turkish state. We invite you to show solidarity with our comrade Volkan Sevinc, who is exposed state terror, and with all political prisoners worldwide.

/// POSSIBILITIES FOR THE POST-CAPITALIST ERA ///
Saturday, 13th February, 5pm
Housmans Bookshop, 5 Caledonian Road, King’s Cross, London N1 9DX,
Tel: 020 7837 4473
“Dissident economist” Harry Shutt predicted the recent economic collapse as early as 1998 with his book ‘The Trouble With Capitalism’. In the second edition of this remarkably prescient publication, he argues that the on-going crisis has arisen as a result of fundamental economic problems, stemming from the growing redundancy of both labour and capital since the 1970s. In doing so, he exposes the sham of laissez-faire economics, showing that state power and capital are increasingly being used to prop up capital while pretending that the aim is to roll back the frontiers of the state.
His latest book, ‘Beyond the Profits System: Possibilities for the Post-Capitalist Era’, moves beyond the predictions explored in ‘The Trouble With Capitalism’ to offer a radical yet realistic way forward in light of the catastrophe.
The author will be discussing his theories and publications, answering questions and signing books. Do join us at Housmans for what promisesto be an extremely interesting event.
