Rampart Newsletter for 5th of December, and not a day sooner

Hey, hope you’re all well and dandy.

Some quick notices:

- Call for skills to share at the Rampart Free School (starting in
January 200 8)

As part of our DIY culture, we want to start a regular “free school”
event at Rampart from January 2008. It will happen every other Sunday,
starting at 3pm, ending time depending on the subject.

Everyone is a specialist of something, and can share it with everyone else.
Theoretical (science, politics, languages…) or practical (electricity,
building, sports…) knowledge are welcome. Even if you are not an
expert the free school is place for shared learning as well as teaching.

If you have any skill you want to share (or learn), contact us and we’ll
be more than happy to include you in the Free School 2008 program!!
contact: spadella@no-log.org

- Fortress Rampart, not like Europe’s borders but as in the ramparts of
a castle!!

We want to build a new front door for all the battering it has taken
from the local kids and people that just don’t accept a closed door in
their lives..

So it’s gotta be strong, so strong.. all thru the night..

For this ‘Mental Metal’ door we will need : loan of an ARC welder or MIG
welder, angle iron, nice strong hinges and metal sheet to clad it with.

Hopefully we’ll also fix the fire-exit which has been broken since
somebody tried to kick it in.

As always, any help you can offer with this sort of thing would be
greatly appreciated.

== Beginners Hatha Yoga ==

We have Yoga every Saturday at the RampArt. Bring loose clothing and a
positive mind and get ready to feel the great benefits that Yoga can
bring you.

Hatha yoga is a balanced system of asanas/postures, conscious breathing
and relaxation. The benefits from practice include increased
flexibility, strength, energy flow, balance of the hormonal system and
the mind. It is especially beneficial during periods of stress and
anxiety because of its re-energising and calming effects. The class is
for beginners but is also suitable for more advanced practitioners as
the intensity of practice is dependent on the individual. Jupiter
qualified as a yoga teacher from the Ananda Seva yoga programme in
Finland. Ananda Seva takes its form of Hatha yoga from Shrii Shrii
Ananda Murti, a spiritual leader and a renowned socio-economic theorist.

..:: Sunday 9th December <<12PM-3PM>> ::..

== Seated Acupressure Massage ==

Would normally be on a Saturday but this week Anne has to do Sunday this week.

Alternative Health has come a long way from the rhetoric of the past and
it has all come full circle now, with many practitioners gaining
multitudes of qualifications and experienced proof that it really
works!! With this in mind…the RampArt are really elated to have a new
therapy offered here…along with Hatha Yoga, Homeopathy, we can now offer
all tired and combat-fatigued activists loving and to the point seated
acupressure massage. Each session lasts approximately 20 minutes and is
done whilst seated and fully clothed. If you would like to be massaged,
please email Anne with a time slot that suits you. Sessions start at
12pm and every 20 minutes there-after till 3pm. Don’t be late for that
massage date!

The sequence works to improve the flow of energy throughout the body and
acts additionally on the muscular, nervous and circulatory systems. Over
sixty acupressure points are included as well as specific trigger
points. It is a revitalizing tonifying treatment and it promotes a sense
of well being, in simple terms: it feels great!

>>>>>>> Beginners Hatha Yoga with Jupiter in the Yellow Room<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>Saturday’s at 4pm – 5.30pm<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>> Radical Theory Reading Group <<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>FRIDAY 30th November From 6.30PM <<<<<<<<<

Radical Theory Reading Group - A forum for informal discussion of radical ideas and utopian visions, which might lead to strategies for social change. We read philosophers, social theorists and mad visionaries with no particular agenda other than to fire our imaginations, unleash our desires and provide a space where knowledge can be free. Some come to express themselves, others just to listen.
Everyone is welcome. Readings are chosen on an ad hoc basis so everyone gets a chance to propose a topic for discussion. Just turn up and join in.

The next reading group meeting will be on Friday, November 30th 2007
We’ll be reading selections from Emma Goldman’s writings
http://dwardmac.pitzer.edu/Anarchist_archives/goldman/GoldmanCW.html .
Suggest ‘The Tragedy of Woman’s Emancipation’ and ‘Marriage and Love’ and anything else that you have time for.

>>>>>>>>> Come to this gig! An Occupied London Benefit <<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>Sat 1st Dec 2007 from 7pm <<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>Other stuff happening……<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>Woman! Reclaim the Night<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>Saturday, November 24, 2007 at 6:00pm Trafalgar Square<<<<<<<<<<

Reclaim The Night 2007 is a women-only march against rape and male violence. It will be followed by a mixed rally and party for men and women at the University of London Union, with speakers, bands, DJs and dancing until 1am. Reclaim your right to party!

According to the British Crime Survey (2001) there are an estimated 47,000 rapes every year, in the UK, around 40,000 attempted rapes and over 300,000 sexual assaults. Yet our conviction rate is the lowest it has ever been, one of the lowest in Europe, at only 5.3%. This means that more rapists were convicted in the 1970s when Reclaim The Night marches first started than they are now. Did you know that the maximum sentence possible for rape is life imprisonment? Probably not, because rarely are rapists even reported or convicted, let alone with a realistic sentence. This situation has to change. We march to demand justice for rape survivors.

Tell everyone you know and also….• Do pass the flyers to your friends and contacts and put them up in your place of work, library, etc.• Do publicise the march at your trade union and get support for it to be discussed as an agenda item.• Give out flyers at your Uni, women’s group, book group, school, college, place of worship, party political group, etc., etc.

Let’s try and make this march bigger than last year’s, which had 1,200 women!

>>>>>Buy Nothing Day. Friday 23rd November 2007<<<<<<<<<<<<<

This is easy if you are broke….like us, but try this….on Friday, its Buy Nothing Day!!!!
Even if you have 2 pence…try not to spend it today.

On Friday November 23rd 2007, environmentalists, social activists and concerned citizens in as many as 65 countries will hit the streets for a 24-hour
consumer fast in celebration of the 15th annual Buy Nothing Day, a global cultural phenomenon that originated in Vancouver, Canada.
http://www.adbusters.org/home/

>>>>>>>>>>> Lovinsky Pierre-Antoine. International Rolling Fast & Vigil<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>For the safe return by Christmas of Lovinsky Pierre-Antoine human rights activist who disappeared in Haiti on 12 August 2007<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Urgent help is needed to ensure the safe return of this man. He is an internationally respected Haitian human rights activist who is an extraordinary grassroots leader. Lovinsky is generally known for being a co-founder of Fondayson Trant Septanm, an organisation founded by families and others concerned about the victims of the 1991 coup, similar to the work of the Mothers of the Disappeared in Central and South America, they held weekly vigils demanding justice for victims of human rights violations and the release of political prisoners.

Why hold the fast outside the Brazilian Embassy? The Brazilian government heads the UN forces which have had the responsibility for law and order in Haiti since President Aristide was forced to leave Haiti in 2004. The US and Canada are also key figures. We are urging them to do all in their power, including making resources available, to ensure Lovinsky’s immediate and safe release

This event has moved to Tuesdays, please show solidarity and met here:
Every Tuesday 5-6 pm
Outside the Brazilian Embassy
32 Green Street
London W1K 7AT

For more info….

Lastly….

Please remember that the Rampart is a NON RESIDENTIAL building. This means we do not have people living in the building for long periods of time. People are welcome to crash from all parts of the UK and all over the world if they are in London for a political event or reason for short periods of agreed time. You need to talk to someone in the collective BEFORE you come and dates need to be agreed. We unfortunately cannot house people who are temporarily homeless or between squats, otherwise the RampArt will not be able to run as a social centre. You are not welcome to just sleep on the sofas for weeks on end without even asking someone….sorry! And we will kick your butt….

Also lastly, just to clarify, the Rampart had nothing to do with the squatters next door who were evicted some weeks ago. There has been some evil rumours that the collective that help run the social centre here at 15-17 Rampart Street, chucked out people from numbers 11 and 11a Rampart Street, which we didn’t. Durrrrrr….who told you that, the big fat white man with the white beard and red jacket and his army of reindeer? Yes?…Exactly…
Don’t believe the crap

This SATURDAY 17th November____5PM - 7PM

@___RampArt Users Meeting

Nobody has any idea how much longer the building in Rampart Street will remain occupied and utilized as a radical autonomous space, but as one of the few social centers in London the collective running the rampART are keen to make the most of it and would like to hear peoples views and ideas about the social center and how it is being run.

On Saturday 17th (starting at 5pm till 7pm), there will be a user consultation meeting.

Unlike the weekly collective meetings this one is not about practical matters or events booking. It will not be a decision making meeting but more of a consultation and visioning exercise, an opportunity for the collective to analyse the current and potential role of the rampART to different groups and campaigns. It will provide an opportunity for for people not familiar with the collective to gain greater understanding of the decision-making processes, practical issues and problems related to project. Additionally it will enable the various individuals and groups using the space to meet each other and discuss any issues relating to their shared use of facilities.

Hopefully the gathering would enable us to improve not only the rampART itself but also to aid communication between the different groups that use the space. We are looking for ways that groups or individuals can be more involved in the ongoing running of the space and strengthen the organising collective.

Knowing that many people dislike meetings, this one will be kept relatively short. It will run from 5pm to 7pm followed by food, drinks and quiet music to allow people to chat, network and socialize.

Please email us if you are thinking of attending and forward this invite to other people you know who use the rampART or who you think might like to get involved in some way.

Also, if you have facilitation skills or ideas about how best to structure the meeting, please let us know.

——————————–

Then after that on SATURDAY 17th November____9PM - MIDNIGHT

@___’Hello Bastards’ - post social, post meeting after party.

Benefit for the Vegan Prisoners Support Group with the anarcho/political punk band ‘Hello Bastards’ playing along with a band from Sweden.

Lineup:

- Anchor (Sweden)

- Honour Among Thiefs

- Hello Bastards (anarcho/political punk band from London)

——————————–

And the following week, next TUESDAY 20th November____7PM

@___Indymedia training

For those of you who want to get involved in indymedia but are not too sure how, or fancy knowing how indymedia works, or have gone all the way to an indymedia meeting but it all sounded like a mix of spanish and chinese to you…

The next indymedia training in London will be on Tuesday the 20th of November 07 at about 7pm in Rampart social centre, 15-17 Rampart Street, London E1 2LA. http://rampart.co.nr/

Do come prepared with pen and paper so you can take notes.

This is a vague outline of the intended contents;

History introduction, - why indymedia was created
Delete intermediary between actors and audience
Take away commercial relationship by which news are sold and bought right to reply

Expansion - first stages
Principles of unity and membership criteria
Software, servers
Localisation - the UK site
iMC uk and decentralisation
iMC london,
Relationship between London and UK site, then global site.

Hands-on
- how to write a [newswire] article
- how to edit pictures (gimp)- what formats to use, etc …
- appropriate formats for audio/video
- how to publish (the technical bit)
- irc for when things go wrong
- basic internet security, strictly for the very beginners, on how to use (and why) encryption and/or secure connections

It might not happen that all these things get covered but you should get out inspired to write lots of reports , lots of features and do lots of admin to avoid the closure of the indymedia site.

——————————–

And that WEDNESDAY 21st November____7PM - 11.30PM

@___Load of WANC at rampART

The Womens Anarchist Nusiance Cafe is held every penultimate wednesday of the month at the RampART creative centre and social space in Rampart St, E1 2LA (rampart.co.nr) open from: 7.00pm-11.30pm.

(http://www.myspace.com/wanccafe)

And then some weeks away on FRIDAY 30th November____6.30PM

@___Radical Theory Reading Group

Next reading group meeting will be on Friday, November 30th at rampART Social
Centre, 15-17 Rampart Street, London, E1.

We’ll be reading selections from Emma Goldman’s writings
http://dwardmac.pitzer.edu/Anarchist_archives/goldman/GoldmanCW.html.

ELSEWHERE, every week until his return

@____Bring Lovinsky Home!

Vigil calling for his immediate, safe return

Friday 26 Oct 5.30-6.30pm
at Edith Cavell Statue
St Martin’s Lane, nr Trafalgar Square WC2

Lovinsky Pierre-Antoine, the internationally respected Haitian human rights activist, disappeared in Haiti on the evening of 12 August. He is a well-known and extraordinary grassroots organiser beloved by his community, and a leading advocate for the poor, including street children, teenage mothers and victims of torture.

The London Vigil is in solidarity with international actions called by Haitians who are launching the “Campaign for Mobilization and Consciousness” to keep Lovinsky’s safe return in the public eye and to prick the conscience of the abductors.

We all owe a great debt to the Haitian people. Haiti holds a special place in the hearts of many. As the first Black republic, Haiti led the way for the emancipation of those enslaved everywhere; it was a refuge for Simon Bolivar, the liberator of Latin America, and Haitian troops fought alongside him. The spirited and principled determination of Haitian people and their refusal to bend to the powerful forces which have tried to keep them down, have been and continue to be an inspiration throughout the world but especially to those of us who work to defend human rights. Lovinsky Pierre-Antoine personifies the Haitian spirit which refuses to submit despite all the odds.
