Following reports that news of Michael Jackson’s death caused serious ‘performance problems’ for Google, CNN, AOL, CBS and Yahoo, rampART celebrity snoopers can exclusively reveal an alarming drop in the number of Elvis sightings, coinciding with speculation that Timothy Leary really is dead and the news that Madonna and Bob Dylan ‘are expected to die in the future’. Meanwhile, back at the morgue….

We’re marking the 40th anniversary of Stonewall with a Behind Bars fundraising extravaganza on Saturday night, coupled with the equally extravagant Punx Picnic afterparty. No rampART cafe this week but regular cafes will resume in the near future with (we’ve been promised) scones and home-made jam!

Also:
We’ve been getting reports that some of you have not been getting this newsletter until most of the events are out of date. We send it out early on Tuesday so, if you don’t get it by Tuesday pm, we’ve worked out that it might be because your ISP is scanning it to see if it’s junk. To solve the problem, you need to make sure that the address that it’s sent from
(rampart@mutualaid.org) is in your address book. If this doesn’t work, please let us know.

And, in other news:
The freeschool weekender on housing, squatting and gentrification has been and gone. It was a great success and it has left a beautiful building just waiting for another project to begin. So we call on all those interested in starting up a space to come and get involved…

On Sunday 21st June, as an ending to the freeschool event a discussion was had on what should happen to the building. People expressed an interest incontinuing occupying in order to create a space that complemented the pre-existing projects in East London. With LARC, rampART, freedom, ASS and Belgrade Road all within close proximity we felt a giant free shop would be a nice idea. The building suits it with huge shop windows. Within such close proximity to the centre of finance a daytime space that promotes community without consumerism seems like a pleasant idea. A strong focus could be on attracting a crowd that wouldn’t generally go into squats and social centres by possibly making a space drug free (including alcohol and smoke) and having more family friendly activities. A free bicycle workshop will bring in peddlers by off the street and into the space (or the yard at least….) Regular workshops, infonights, cafes and a food coop were amongst other things discussed.

None of this is set in stone. You can be a part of shaping this project. Come lend a hand, help us occupy and attend the next meeting on TUESDAY 30TH JUNE AT 7PM to discuss what will happen..

love from
the occupiers of 161 commercial street

BEHIND BARS XV “TRANNY-PUNK-HO-DOWN MEETS PUNX PICNIC AFTERHOURS

Benefit Supporting Kaos GL and Pembe Hayat. Kaos GL was first established in 1994. Most of its members were and still are queer political activists with backgrounds in the Turkish anarchist, feminist and anti-military movements. Kaos GL as a collective started publishing a zine by the same name, which became Turkeys first LGBT magazine. Over the years they graduated from a photocopied zine to a more glossy professional looking periodical, partly thanks to their first ever computer which was purchased with money raised in London by the old Queeruption / La-Di-Dah network. Pembe Hayat, which means “Pink Life in English, was formed later, in response to attacks on the transgender sexworker community in the Ankara suburb of Eryaman in 2006. At that time there were a series of well organised attacks, involving gangs of up to fifty people on transwomen sexworkers both in the streets and on the house where they lived. It was suspected that these gangs were connected with the developers who were trying to make the area more respectable.

//THE LATIN AMERICAN COORDINADORA IN LONDON IS CALLING TO EMERGENCY PICKETS IN LONDON TO PROTEST THE HONDURAN COUP DÉTAT///

5pm Tuesday June 30 Honduran Embassy
115 Gloucester Place, London W1U 6JT (nearest Tube: Baker Street or Paddington)

4h30pm Friday 3 July USA Embassy
24 Grosvenor Square, London W1A 1AE (Tube: Bond Street/Marble Arch)

In the early hours of Sunday June 28, a group of soldiers seized the democratically elected president of Honduras Manuel Zelaya at gun-point and took him by plane to Costa Rica. A new president was sworn in, while the army decreed a curfew, tanks patrolled the streets, the government TV channel was taken off the air and a list was issued of social movement leaders to be arrested.

The trigger for the coup was an attempt by Zelaya to call a Constituent Assembly in order to reform the country’s constitution. Zelaya’s government had carried out a whole series of progressive reforms in the fields of education and health care, breaking the monopoly of the multinationals in the pharmaceutical and oil sector and boosting the minimum wage by 60% and had the support of the majority of workers, peasants and the poor. His government brought Honduras into the ALBA regional bloc, aligning itself with the progressive governments of Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador, Cuba, Nicaragua and others, whose leaders are holding an emergency summit in Managua to reverse the coup.

The masses have come out on the streets and are striking to reject this coup. We give them our full support and demand that the British government backs Zelaya as the only legitimate president of Honduras and acts to bring about the immediate restoration of constitutional order.

Down with the reactionary coup!
Bring back Zelaya!

//WHAT THE OTHER FEMINISTS LOOK LIKE…///

On Tuesday 30th June
Paying a visit to Harriet Harman, Southwark Townhall (5pm), followed by film showing (6.30pm) at Studio 96, The Galleria, Pennack Road, SE16 6PW

An evening of making trouble, sharing ideas and planning ways for women to fight back against the crisis, hosted by Feminist Fightback. All genders welcome!
This is a fundraiser for Lambeth Womens Project
www.lambethwomen.wordpress.com

Harriet Harman, Minister for Women, thinks that a feminist response to the recession would be to place more women in top city jobs, putting them in charge of the banks. Meanwhile Harman supports the Welfare Reform Bill, which proposes to introduce US-style workfare practices, forcing mothers of young children into minimum wage jobs or risk losing their benefits. Harriet Harman likes to talk up her feminist credentials, but what kind of feminist only looks out for the interests of rich women during times of economic crisis? In fact, Harman has a long track record of selling out the majority of women she claims to represent most recently playing a key role in blocking a Bill to legalise abortion in Northern Ireland. If this is how the Minister for Women is going to act on our behalf, then we can do without her!

Fortunately, Harriet Harmans feminism isnt the only kind on offer. Many women in London are organising to resist the iniquities of capitalism from the parents occupying Lewisham Bridge Primary School to protest against its privatisation; to hostel residents demanding decent housing in Hackney; to the Visteon workers who occupied their factory and finally won their redundancy. Feminist Fightback has also been organising grass roots resistance to some of Harmans biggest sell-outs during her time as Minister for Women occupying the Department for Work and Pensions in protest against the Welfare Reform Bill, and taking direct action in solidarity with Northern Irish women who continue to be denied the right to control their own bodies.

Feminist Fightback invites you to join us outside Southwark Town Hall to show Harriet Harman that women have been fighting back in ways very different to those she proposes. Well be decorating the Town Hall, sending message to Harman in a variety of ‘creative’ ways, and inviting our Minister for Women to come out and take a look!

This will be followed by a film showing introducing a number of women-led struggles taking place at the moment. We want this to be an opportunity to find out whats going on in London; to make links with other womens groups; and to find inspiration for how we can act collectively to take control of our workplaces, our communities and our lives. To find out more email feminist.fightback@gmail.com, call 07976 274516 or come along to our next planning meeting, Wednesday 10 June, 6.30pm at the Highbury Roundhouse, 71 Ronald’s Road, N5 (nearest tube: Highbury and Islington). Contact email: feminist.fightback@gmail,com

//UNITED STRIKE ACTION AT LONDON MET UNI, 2ND JULY///

* UNISON members vote 71% in favour of strike action
* UCU members to take further strike action in coordination with UNISON * 2nd July set for combined union day of action
* Pickets all morning set to close down London Met Uni for a day * Rally at Lunchtime (with this space for details)

One of the main strengths of our campaign to save jobs and defend education at London Met is that we have been united from the start. When UCU took strike action in May UNISON stood shoulder-to-shoulder with them and provided the maximum amount of solidarity we legally could pending our own industrial action ballot. And when students occupied their department bulding over course closures, both UCU and UNISON supported their legitimate protest. UNISON members have now overwhelmingly (over 71%) voted for industrial action and have announced to members that they will be taking strike action on Thursday July 2nd.
As a result of that decision, and in line with UCU’s ballot mandate, and the position unanimously passed at recent UCU members meetings, UCU notified management that their members will join UNISON colleagues. They we will also be taking strike action on Thursday 2nd July (see UCU press relesae). UNISON and UCU have chosen this date to avoid hitting student assessment in order to enable our students to join us. Please urge your students to support our strike, to join us in collecting signatures outside the main doors of most buildings and to participate in our rally at lunchtime on Thursday (details to follow).
Please also bear in mind that to be effective, we need to make as much noise as possible. We need members outside each entrance all morning and at the rally at lunchtime.
Please pass this on to your union contacts, to your friends and family and urge them to join us and show solidarity with our strike. Our fight is your fight. Contacts us via UCU or UNISON, and come to our pickets and rally on Thursday to show your support. See further updates and reports here:

//SOLIDARITY WITH MINGA OF INDIGENOUS AND POPULAR RESISTANCE///

COLOMBIA SOLIDARITY CAMPAIGN 10am 5.30pm 4th July 2009
Free entry
School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), Brunei Building, Thornhaugh St, London WC1

Current situation in Colombia and Britain
The Minga of Indigenous and Popular Resistance

My very wise father used to say when we have to cry we will do it together, together we will feel the pain, we dont cry like cowards, we resist Aida Quilcue, Interview April 2009

Aida Quilcue, former Councillor of the CRI (Consejo Regional Indígena de Cauca) and spokeswomen of The Minga of Indigenous and Popular resistance has been victim of the Colombian State more than once. On 16th December 2008 her husband, Edwin Legarda, was assassinated by the Colombian armed forces – a crime that remains unpunished, as do many other human rights violations in a country in which impunity reigns. On 12th May 2009 Aidas 12 year old daughter narrowly escaped an attack by four armed gunmen who lay in wait outside their home.

This has not prevented Aida from going on with the fight and resistance of the indigenous people, participating actively in the Minga and fighting against impunity and power abuses. Today she is being persecuted again, at the beginning of June the public prosecutor’s office issued an arrest warrant against her and other indigenous leaders. The charges: having carried out a process within the Especial Indigenous Jurisdiction against a member of the armed forces that has infiltrated in The Minga illegally. This jurisdiction is recognised by the Colombian constitution and the process has been carried out legally and publicly. The arrest warrant prevents her leaving the country and therefore she was not able to come to the UK to bring her message in a visit that was already scheduled.

We want to transmit Aidas message – the authorities can stop persons, but they cannot stop our voices!

This week, we’re inspired by the news that cameras are potentially lethal weapons after West Yorkshire police remanded members of Fitwatch in custody on the grounds that they considered themselves in danger of ‘physical or mental injury’. Next Freeschool will be dedicated to honing our photography skills. Workshops will be offered in Pointing and Shooting, Effective Framing and Dodging and Burning. Donations of suitable equipment urgently required (Hasselblads preferred). Meanwhile, back at the darkroom…

Thursday cafe this week moves up to the roof. We’re taking advantage of the good weather and inviting suggestions for plugging the holes before it rains again.

And, in other news:
An eviction notice has been served on the occupation at Lewisham Bridge.

–- Bailiffs are arriving at 10.30 on Wednesday morning, Callout for people to stay overnight –

Hands Off Lewisham Bridge are asking for your support in resisting the eviction. We need as many people as possible to stay overnight on Tuesday. If you can’t stay overnight then please come down as early as possible on Wednesday morning to support the occupation.

We want to let Lewisham Council know that they are evicting people who have been peacefully protesting over the destruction of community education at our school.

Lewisham Council still don’t have planning permission for their new school. Lewisham Council still haven’t told us why the decant had to take place at Easter, when children were taking SATs and banding tests. Lewisham Council still haven’t told us why they are prepared to wash their hands of the responsibility of educating our children.

If Lewisham Bridge Primary School is given to Leathersellers we parents will have no say in the governance of our school. Staff will be employed by Leathersellers who will set their own terms and conditions taking those teachers out of a collective national teaching body.

This is privatisation! This is bringing the market into our kids’ education, where the only motivation is profit and the only measure is league tables and headcount. Competition will be the name of the game.
Trusts and academies will compete for those children they believe to be desirable and leave those whom they don’t on the scrapheap. Why have Prendergast rejected the Travellers Education Service that used to be based at the school? Why have Prendergast rejected the proposal to establish a SEN unit at the new school?

A consultation process has already started for a trust led by Goldsmiths University which will govern 3 schools: Addey & Stanhope, Deptford Green and Crossways. It is a process that has exactly the same goal. To take our schools out of the public sector and hand them over to the private sector.

We cannot let them get away with this. We can fight this together and we can win!

Come down to Lewisham Bridge Primary School and let the bailiffs know that we’re not going easily.

// Calais No Border Camp < 23 – 29 juin / june 2009 > ///

============================================

The Calais No Border camp is a joint venture between French and Belgian activists and migrant support groups and the UK No Borders Network. It aims to highlight the realities of the situation in Calais and Northern France; to build links with the migrant communities; to help build links between migrants support groups ; and lastly, but not least, to challenge the authorities on the ground, to protest against increased repression of migrants and local activists alike.

This camp calls for the freedom of movement for all, an end to borders and to all migration controls. We call for a radical movement against the systems of control, dividing us into citizens and non-citizens, into the documented and the undocumented.

We are included in the No Border Camps’ ‘tradition’, set up in the whole world since 15 years – Strasbourg 2002, Gatwick 2007, at the US-Mexican border or in Ukraine in 2007 and we are linked to the August ‘09 No Border Camp in Lesvos … Everyone is invited to join the camp to discuss about the borders and freedom of movement issues, to imagine and take part into symbolical actions, to live together collectively with the migrants of Calais and the activists and to demonstrate on the 27th of June !

// CALLING ALL BIKE PUNKS! The 56a Bike Room needs fresh blood! ///

============================================

Ask not what your Infoshop can do for you, but what you can do for your infoshop…

The Bike Room at the 56a Infoshop needs volunteers to come and hang out, drink tea, share their bike skillz and learn some new ones.

We’re a collective of bike geeks trying to provide a real alternative to bike shops by helping people to fix their own bikes instead of charging them money to do it, and by recycling and scavenging old bicycles and bike parts. We also stock a small amount of essential bits and bobs like cables and inner tubes that we sell at cost price.

But we’d like to do so much more!

The more people there are to help out, the easier it is for everyone who comes here, the more people we can get cycling and the more fun we all have.

If you think you can commit to doing a couple of hours each week then pop down to say hi to one of the volunteers. We’re open 3-7 Weds, 2-8 Thurs, 3-7 Fri and 2-6 Sat and we’re at 56a Crampton Street, SE17 3AE. Come along and we’ll show you around and let you get on with pimping out people’s bikes!

This week, our special event is a photograph exhibition on saturday 13th at 7pm. K. James took pictures of squats and squatters around London and will be showing them at the Library House.

Summer is coming, and there will probably be some changes at the Library House.
First is the change of shape of our cafe. Wednesday evenings will be less food and more sun: welcome to our Summer Cinema Libre!

Once in a while we will do a special cafe (maybe benefit, special screenings, talks etc) with lots of food but we will let you know on time off course! Contact us if you want to put on a special event on a wednesday!

Kundalini Yoga is over. There might be some random yoga lessons during summer, just keep an eye on the newsletter and the website if you’re interested.

Also, if you interested in more SOMA anarchist therapy workshops (cause you couldn’t make it on the open day!), contact us and we’ll put you in contact with the relevant people :)

==Tuesday 9th 8pm==
*Weekly Collective meeting*
This is a good chance to talk to the collective if you want to have an event in the space or to find out more about getting involved there.

==Wednesday 10th 8pm onwards==
*Summer Cinema Libre*
>From now on the cafes on wednesdays in the Library House will be a little bit different. It’s getting summery and so its light outside till late. We will serve snacks (cakes, salads or whatever) but no complete meals anymore. So come at 8pm for snacks and films to the Library House!

==Thursday 11th 7-9pm==
*Capoeira*
We are a group of people sharing and learning some capoeira. We want to have fun while finding our roots. If the weather is nice, we should go in the park. We usually practice movements, make a rodinha and play live music. We have all we need: good mood, a lot of energy and willingness to learn. Sessions are free, and you are more than welcome to join us!

==Saturday 13th 7-10pm==
*Blink and you’ll miss it: Squats close up*
New photographs by K. James. K. James presents several groups of images, both black and white and colour, that challenge us to look closer at the people and landscapes of the London squatting scene.

// SPEAK OUT AGAINST RACISM AND DEPORTATIONS ///

Saturday 13 June 2009 12pm noon
Upper St, N1, Outside Angel Station

Open-air rally with speeches from anti-racist groups across London, uniting to take a common stand in defence of migrant workers and asylum seekers.

Please come along and bring speeches, music, chants, literature. Add your voice and help us speak out againt racism.

Public rally outside Angel Tube station, Islington, London N1

‘The message is clear – whether you’re a visa overstayer, a foreign criminal or a failed asylum seeker, the UK Border Agency is determined to track you down and remove you from Britain.’ Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, 18 March 2009

Racism is the form which national oppression takes within an imperialist country like Britain. Imperialist nations brutally exploit and impoverish oppressed nations, justifying their plunder and wars on the basis that people in these countries are inferior or have brought their oppression on themselves. They then use immigration laws to keep out people fleeing from the resulting war and poverty. The British working class is encouraged to see immigrants as the cause of its problems rather than capitalism. State racism and divide-and-rule government tactics are creating a fertile recruiting ground for overtly racist parties like the British National Party.

As Britain’s capitalist crisis increases its hold, the Labour government is stepping up its offensive against migrants and state racism is on the rise.

• Immigration detention capacity has increased from just 250 spaces in 1993 to 3,038 spaces with plans in the pipeline to increase the detention estate by 60% by 2012. Foreign nationals in criminal prisons are currently being moved into designated ‘ghetto’ prisons.
• In November 2008, Immigration Minister Phil Woolas boasted that the government is deporting immigrants at a rate of one every eight minutes. It is making increasing use of charter flight mass deportations.
• Ten years after the McPherson Inquiry into the death of Stephen Lawrence branded the Metropolitan Police ‘institutionally racist’, black people are still seven times more likely to be stopped and searched than white people are.
• Anti-terrorism laws are being indiscriminately used to round up Muslim and Asian people and criminalise their communities. On 8 April 12 innocent Pakistani students were arrested on the pretext they were planning a bombing campaign. When it became apparent they were innocent they were handed over to the Borders Agency to be detained pending deportation.
So just as the Home Secretary’s message is clear, ours must be too.

NO DETENTION! NO DEPORTATIONS! NO TO STATE RACISM!
SUPPORT ASYLUM SEEKERS AND MIGRANT WORKERS!

// FULL UNEMPLOYMENT CINEMA AT 56a ///

Yes, our rolling free film programme continues this month with 56a presentation of a recently made fil about Lucio, an anarchist bankrobber, kidnapper and bricklayer. Full Unemployment Cinema also present Pitfall, a marvellous 1960’s Japanese classic.

- TUESDAY 16th June 7.30pm: ‘Lucio’ (2007)

‘Urtubia Lucio has devoted his entire life to anarchism. He collaborated with Che Guevara, robbed Citibank of 3,000 million pesetas, has been involved in notorious kidnapping … all without missing a day at his job as a bricklayer.’
http://www.moriarti.com/lucio.html

- SUNDAY 21st June 5pm: (Changed from earlier advertised 3pm!!)
Full Unemployment Cinema at 56a – ‘PITFALL’, Hiroshi Teshigahara (1962)

Based on the experimental fiction of postwar novelist Kobo Abe, Pitfall is a haunting, spare, and elemental, yet surreal and atmospheric portrait of alienation. Teshigahara weaves actual footage of coal miners and their hungry and desperate families into Pitfall to establish his sympathy for the workers, but do not expect a neo-realist call to arms.

// FREESCHOOL ON HOUSING, SQUATTING & GENTRIFICATION ///

============================================

Location to be confirmed…
19th – 21st June 2009

A weekend of free workshops, discussions and skillsharing focusing on issues relating to housing and squatting is being planned for mid-June. The London FreeSchool will be occupying an empty building for the weekend. This is an open project for people to come and get involved in creating a new space from the beginning. It will hopefully include workshops relating to opening/fixing squats, housing rights and gentrification.

For this to be successful we need people… So, if you are skilled in the art of lockpicking, enjoy fixing toilets, have loads of knowledge relating to housing co-ops or anything else that is vaguely relevant that you wish to share we would love to hear from you!

London FreeSchool aims to confront the hierachy and inequality that dominates learning. It stems from a belief that the control and institutionalisation of education is wrong and as communities we need to reclaim knowledge in order to develop self-reliance. It is a collectively run project open to all so come get involved…

SPECIAL EVENT

*Saturday 6th June 7pm // Resistance to the 2010 Canadian olympics*

This saturday the 6th of June at 7pm 2a Belgrade road will be hosting a meeting and discussion on resistance to the 2010 Canadian olympics. Hope to see a few of you there. Social War is Everywhere – No 2010 Olympics on Stolen Land. The “Bosses Grand Idea,” the Olympics, aptly termed by Greek anarchists in the time leading up to the 2004 Athens Olympics, is coming to Vancouver in 2010. We say it is already here. Before winning the Olympic bid in 2003, urban development, tourism and resource exploitation were heavily promoted as a way to sell BC on an international level. Not just an event, the Olympics functions to market this land, through ski resorts, mining, shipping ports, highways and security; to catalyze and secure the projects of the bosses. The Olympics serves to enforce projects of exploitation and social control across British Columbia that will, in many cases, integrate and bolster capitalist infrastructure internationally. Initially, anarchists in British Columbia, were inspired to participate in anti-Olympics efforts by the ongoing indigenous resistance to ski-resorts and development, destroying land and ways of life. By continuing in long-term pre-existing struggles, indigenous resistance is at the forefront of the anti-Olympics fight.

//CLIMATE RUSH PEDAL POWER///

MONDAY 1ST JUNE, 5PM

…A GOOD OLD-FASHIONED START-OF-SUMMER BIKE RIDE!

On Monday 1st June the UK Parliament returns from recess for the summer sitting. We want to give them a warm welcome and remind them of the heat they can expect if they continue to ignore climate change.

Ed Miliband (Secretary of State Energy and Climate Change) is in Bonn that evening, discussing with other ‘world leaders’ the agenda for the UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen. Let’s give our ‘leaders’ a taste of the civil disobedience they can expect if real climate justice fails to materialise.

It is also the first evening of a coal conference at the illustrious ‘Chatham House’. Everyone who’s anyone, at least in the coal world, will be there.

We’ll begin our bike-ride outside their conference before winding our way through town.

Meet us from 5pm on St James Square, SW1Y 4LE. We’ll then move off at 6pm and take our bikes for a relaxed tour through London. Labour might think that investing in electric cars is the solution to climate change but we know that cars using electricity from coal-fired power stations is yet another red-herring.

//MELTDOWN: THE END OF THE AGE OF GREED///

with Paul Mason

WEDNESDAY, 3RD JUNE, 7PM

Newsnight’s economics editor Paul Mason discusses the financial crash and explains why, love it or loathe it, the neo-liberal era is over. Followed by Q&A and book signing. ‘Meltdown’ tells the story of the financial crash that destroyed the West’s investment banks, brought the global economy to its knees, and began to undermine three decades of neo-liberal orthodoxy. Covering the credit crunch and its aftershocks from the economic front line, BBC journalist Paul Mason explores the roots of the US and UK’s financial hubris, documenting the real-world causes and consequences from the Ford factory, to Wall Street, to the City of London.

In response to the immense challenge now facing the existing economic system, he outlines a new era of hyper-regulated capitalism that could emerge from the wreckage. Paul Mason writes: “The book tells the story of the events of September-October 2008: I’m the economics editor of BBC Newsnight, so I had a ringside seat. It explains how we got here – from the shadow banking system, to subprime, to the commodities speculation that forced a billion people to go without meals in mid-2008. It also explains why, love it or loathe it, the neo-liberal era is over.”

Paul Mason is the economics editor of BBC Newsnight and has covered globalisation and social justice stories from locations across the world, including Latin America, Africa and China. His previous book ‘Live Working, Die Fighting’ was longlisted for the Guardian First Book Award.

//THE LATIN AMERICAN TURN: ON THE UNFINISHED PROJECT OF DECOLONISATION///

THURSDAY 4TH JUNE 9.30 – 5.30 One day Public Workshop Room B35 Birkbeck College

In European debates on the politics of emancipation, from Philosophy to Social, Legal, and Political Theory, from Jurgen Habermas to Toni Negri and Slavoj Zizek, the idea of the ‘unfinished project of modernity’ has become a mantra. In contrast, in other parts of the world, in the so-called ‘global South’ and specifically in Latin America, the debate that rages on, concerns the unfinished project of decolonisation. Crucially, in the Americas this debate takes place not only in theory but also in actual political practice, in places like Bolivia, Venezuela, and Brazil, but also among the Latino/Hispanic communities in the U.S. and in the Caribbean. This workshop will contribute to the exploration of such a problem and hopefully to the beginning of a more rigorous, equal and true dialogue.

Speakers: Linda Martin-Alcoff (City University of New York) Marcia Martins da Rosa (NHS) Enrique Dussel (National Autonomous University of Mexico & UAM-Iztapalapa) Lewis Ricardo Gordon (Temple University, Philadelphia) Nelson Maldonado-Torres (University of California, Berkeley) Ramón Grosfoguel (University of California, Berkeley) Eduardo Mendieta (State University of New York) Paul Gilroy (LSE) tbc.

RampART is five years old this month which makes us about 500 in social centre years. We want to say a big thank you to all the people and organisations who have used the space, helped out, supported and inspired us.
Celebrate with us on Friday, May 29 th and raise a glass to another five years of piracy and mayhem. Music from our favourite bands and Djs + our resident rampRATS squeaking up a storm and a special guest appearance by the contents of the rampART fridge. Party like it’s 2004!! Meanwhile, we’d like
to thank Conservative MP Anthony Steen for the announcement that he has a ‘very, very large house’. Any other MP, Peer of the Realm, CEO or reigning monarch with space to spare should contact us via the website. Coming up this week….

//TUESDAY, 26th MAY, 7PM AND EVERY TUESDAY///

CINEMA LIBRE

Cinema Libre is a chance for people to meet up and discuss their perspectives and share and learn from others in an informal environment. Discussion is open, and we always look forward to all contributions. Each week we bring you a selection of shorts and feature documentaries in an attempt to flesh out the issues and explore the solutions and action needed.

Remember its still all free so your support is the only currency worth anything and our in-action the only deficit worth worrying about.

RADICAL THEORY READING GROUP

We’ll be reading Chapter 3, ‘Anarchism, Poststructuralism and the Politics of Sexuality: Sexual Orientation as State-form’ from a very interesting doctoral thesis by Jamie Heckert called Resisting Orientation: On the Complexities of Desire and the Limits of Identity Politics, available here
http://sexualorientation.info/thesis/Resisting%20Orientation%20-%20C3.pdf
(thanks Anna!) Suggest reading from the sub-head ‘Queer Culture’ on page 54 to the top of page 70 but the whole chapter is interesting if you have the time.

In response to those who have worried about feeling excluded because of the complex language of some of our readings, my suggestion is to find a section that makes sense to you, even if it is only one paragraph, and think about what it might mean in a wider context. All theorists repeat themselves anyway. Or, alternatively, skip the reading and just come along to join in the discussion. No pressure – this is not a university seminar! Happy reading.

/A DIE-IN FOR NATO’S VICTIMS IN AFGHANISTAN///

WEDNESDAY 27 MAY, 11am
Northwood tube station (Metropolitan line)
for a procession to the gates of Britain’s military nerve centre (and NATO
Regional Command)

** Wear wedding clothes **

“We all ran into our houses and later the jets arrived. They dropped one bomb and it hit a wall and demolished it. Dust and dirt went everywhere. Then they dropped another and it destroyed our house … It was meant to be a wedding and at these events you expect happiness, dancing and to see your relatives. You don’t expect your daughters to be killed for no reason” – Haji Abdul Satar, who’s daughters Najeba (9) and Fatima (10) were killed in the US attack on Haji Nabu on 27 May 2007

WHAT IF THEY’D BEEN BRITISH?
On 27 May 2007, forty-seven Afghan civilians were killed when a US war plane bombed a wedding party in Afghanistan. Thousands more have been killed by US/NATO forces since the 2001 invasion.

A BBC poll published on 13 November showed that 68% of people in Britain think all British troops should be withdrawn from Afghanistan within 12 months.

Join us on Wednesday 27 May 2009 for an act of nonviolent civil disobedience at Britain’s military nerve centre in Northwood, demanding an end to the bombing and the withdrawal of all British troops from Afghanistan.

—–
Action called by JNV, the London and Oxford Catholic Workers and Voices UK.

//DIE-IN NONVIOLENT DIRECT ACTION WORKSHOP AND LEGAL BRIEFING///

TUESDAY 26th MAY, 7.30pm

Conway Hall, 25 Red Lion Square, WC1R 4RL

The Die-in is an act of civil disobedience, so by taking part you will be rising arrest. It should be possible to take part in the wedding procession to the main entrance at Northwood, and then to vigil outside, without being arrested. However, whilst the police will usually give ample warning before arresting people – giving you time to comply with their demands etc… – this cannot be guaranteed. Those not wishing to be arrested are welcome to join us on 27th, but should be aware of this reality.

If you are thinking about risking arrest on 27 May and you’ve never been arrested before then we recommend that you attend this legal briefing.

For more info on the arrest process and other possible offences see the briefings on the Activists’ Legal Project web-site:

//TALK + PAMPHLET LAUNCH: GREEN LEFT – ECO-SOCIALISM///

WEDNESDAY, 27TH MAY, 7PM

…putting a green and red spanner in the works…

Green Left is an eco-socialist, anti-capitalist current within the Green Party, which started in June 2006 when 36 Green Party members agreed its launch statement (the Headcorn Declaration).

Sarah Farrow, Green Left co-convenor said then: “Activists in the Green Party have founded Green Left because many Greens believe the only path to an ecological, economically and socially just and peaceful society has to be based on an anti-capitalist political agenda.”

This evening guests from Green Left will be discussing their agenda, and launching a new pamphlet on the issues at hand.

//CLIMATE RUSH PEDAL POWER///

//THE LATIN AMERICAN TURN: ON THE UNFINISHED PROJECT OF DECOLONISATION///

THURSDAY 4TH JUNE 9.30 – 5.30
One day Public Workshop Room B35 Birkbeck College

Boyan Manchev (College International de Philosophie, Paris)
Celebrate with us on Friday, May 29 th and raise a glass to another five
years of piracy and mayhem. Music from our favourite bands and Djs + our
resident rampRATS squeaking up a storm and a special guest appearance by the
CINEMA LIBRE
Cinema Libre is a chance for people to meet up and discuss their perspectives
and share and learn from others in an informal environment. Discussion is
open, and we always look forward to all contributions. Each week we bring you
a selection of shorts and feature documentaries in an attempt to flesh out
the issues and explore the solutions and action needed.

Remember its still all free so your support is the only currency worth
anything
and our in-action the only deficit worth worrying about.

RADICAL THEORY READING GROUP

We’ll be reading Chapter 3, ‘Anarchism, Poststructuralism and the
Politics of Sexuality: Sexual Orientation as State-form’ from a very
interesting doctoral thesis by Jamie Heckert called Resisting Orientation: On
the Complexities of Desire and the Limits of Identity Politics, available
here
http://sexualorientation.info/thesis/Resisting%20Orientation%20-%20C3.pdf
(thanks Anna!) Suggest reading from the sub-head ‘Queer Culture’ on page 54
to the top of page 70 but the whole chapter is interesting if you have the
time.

In response to those who have worried about feeling excluded because of the
complex language of some of our readings, my suggestion is to find a section
that makes sense to you, even if it is only one paragraph, and think about
what it might mean in a wider context. All theorists repeat themselves
anyway. Or, alternatively, skip the reading and just come along to join in
the discussion. No pressure – this is not a university seminar! Happy
reading.

for a procession to the gates of Britain’s military nerve centre (and NATO
Regional Command)

** Wear wedding clothes **

“We all ran into our houses and later the jets arrived. They dropped one bomb
and it hit a wall and demolished it. Dust and dirt went everywhere. Then they
dropped another and it destroyed our house … It was meant to be a wedding
and
at these events you expect happiness, dancing and to see your relatives. You
don’t expect your daughters to be killed for no reason” – Haji Abdul Satar,
who’s daughters Najeba (9) and Fatima (10) were killed in the US attack on
Haji Nabu on 27 May 2007

WHAT IF THEY’D BEEN BRITISH?
On 27 May 2007, forty-seven Afghan civilians were killed when a US war plane
bombed a wedding party in Afghanistan. Thousands more have been killed by
US/NATO forces since the 2001 invasion.

A BBC poll published on 13 November showed that 68% of people in Britain
think
all British troops should be withdrawn from Afghanistan within 12 months.

Join us on Wednesday 27 May 2009 for an act of nonviolent civil disobedience
at Britain’s military nerve centre in Northwood, demanding an end to the
bombing and the withdrawal of all British troops from Afghanistan.

//DIE-IN NONVIOLENT DIRECT ACTION WORKSHOP AND LEGAL BRIEFING///
TUESDAY 26th MAY, 7.30pm

Conway Hall, 25 Red Lion Square, WC1R 4RL

The Die-in is an act of civil disobedience, so by taking part you will be
rising arrest. It should be possible to take part in the wedding procession
to
the main entrance at Northwood, and then to vigil outside, without being
arrested. However, whilst the police will usually give ample warning before
arresting people – giving you time to comply with their demands etc… – this
cannot be guaranteed. Those not wishing to be arrested are welcome to join us
on 27th, but should be aware of this reality.

If you are thinking about risking arrest on 27 May and you’ve never been
arrested before then we recommend that you attend this legal briefing.

For more info on the arrest process and other possible offences see the
briefings on the Activists’ Legal Project web-site:

WEDNESDAY, 27TH MAY, 7PM

…putting a green and red spanner in the works…

Green Left is an eco-socialist, anti-capitalist current within the Green
Party, which started in June 2006 when 36 Green Party members agreed its
launch statement (the Headcorn Declaration).

Sarah Farrow, Green Left co-convenor said then: “Activists in the Green Party
have founded Green Left because many Greens believe the only path to an
ecological, economically and socially just and peaceful society has to be
based on an anti-capitalist political agenda.”

This evening guests from Green Left will be discussing their agenda, and
launching a new pamphlet on the issues at hand.

//CLIMATE RUSH PEDAL POWER///

MONDAY 1ST JUNE, 5PM

…A GOOD OLD-FASHIONED START-OF-SUMMER BIKE RIDE!

On Monday 1st June the UK Parliament returns from recess for the summer
sitting.
We want to give them a warm welcome and remind them of the heat they can
expect if they continue to ignore climate change.

Ed Miliband (Secretary of State Energy and Climate Change) is in Bonn that
evening, discussing with other ‘world leaders’ the agenda for the UN Climate
Summit in Copenhagen. Let’s give our ‘leaders’ a taste of the civil
disobedience they can expect if real climate justice fails to materialise.

It is also the first evening of a coal conference at the illustrious ‘Chatham
House’. Everyone who’s anyone, at least in the coal world, will be there.

We’ll begin our bike-ride outside their conference before winding our way
through town.

Meet us from 5pm on St James Square, SW1Y 4LE. We’ll then move off at 6pm and
take our bikes for a relaxed tour through London. Labour might think that
investing in electric cars is the solution to climate change but we know that
cars using electricity from coal-fired power stations is yet another
red-herring.

//THE LATIN AMERICAN TURN: ON THE UNFINISHED PROJECT OF DECOLONISATION///

THURSDAY 4TH JUNE 9.30 – 5.30
One day Public Workshop Room B35 Birkbeck College

In European debates on the politics of emancipation, from Philosophy to
Social, Legal, and Political Theory, from Jurgen Habermas to Toni Negri
and Slavoj Zizek, the idea of the ‘unfinished project of modernity’ has
become a mantra. In contrast, in other parts of the world, in the
so-called ‘global South’ and specifically in Latin America, the debate
that rages on, concerns the unfinished project of decolonisation.
Crucially, in the Americas this debate takes place not only in theory
but also in actual political practice, in places like Bolivia,
Venezuela, and Brazil, but also among the Latino/Hispanic communities in
the U.S. and in the Caribbean. This workshop will contribute to the
exploration of such a problem and hopefully to the beginning of a more
rigorous, equal and true dialogue.

Martins da Rosa (NHS) Enrique Dussel (National Autonomous University of

Inspired by the charity which provides gardens for traumatised British Army soldiers, we at RampART are proposing a spot of gardening leave for battle weary activists. Spring is supposedly here and building sites abandoned by recession hit developers are turning into mini ecosystems all over London. Anyone interested in squatting some open space and reclaiming the land for a spot of alfresco activism should turn up at our meeting on Monday 25th May and present their horticultural credentials. Meanwhile, back at the potting shed…

***Saturday, 29th May, RAMPART’S 5th BIRTHDAY! FREE PARTY!! FREE PARTY!!***

//TUESDAY, 19th MAY, 7PM AND EVERY TUESDAY///

//THURSDAY, 21ST MAY, 7PM///

RAMPART CAFE – UNI OCCUPATION NIGHT

To celebrate the occupation of our local university and in solidarity with students everywhere protesting the marketization of higher education, the closure of courses and staff redundancies, we’re revisiting the stirrings of dissent in Paris in 1968 when Nanterre university was occupied by student activists. We’ll be showing a short film ‘Outside the Window: Events in France, May 1968′ which looks at the events from the perspective of film makers, followed by discussion and FREE FOOD. Joel will be cooking.

//SATURDAY 23rd MAY, 11pm – 6am///

RADICAL ROUTES 21ST BIRTHDAY AFTERPARTY

Eltham John – Jungley Dub Dr Colossus – Yardcore Everyday Junglist – Folkstep Junglism

Trebor soundsystem

//OTHER UPCOMING EVENTS AT RAMPART///

//FRIDAY, 29th MAY, 6pm///

RADICAL THEORY READING GROUP

We’ll be reading Chapter 3, ‘Anarchism, Poststructuralism and the Politics of Sexuality: Sexual Orientation as State-form’ from a very interesting doctoral thesis by Jamie Heckert called Resisting Orientation: On the Complexities of Desire and the Limits of Identity Politics, available here http://sexualorientation.info/thesis/Resisting%20Orientation%20-%20C3.pdf (thanks Anna!) Suggest reading from the sub-head ‘Queer Culture’ on page 54 to the top of page 70 but the whole chapter is interesting if you have the time.

//FRIDAY, 29th MAY, 9pm – Late///

*FREE* PARTY TO CELEBRATE RAMPART’S 5TH BIRTHDAY!!!

//EDUCATION AND YOUTH IN COLOMBIA – 7PM TUESDAY, 19TH MAY///

Colombia Solidarity Campaign The Apple Tree pub, 45 Mount Pleasant, WC1 (Russell Square, Farringdon, Kings X or Angel tube)

A discussion of ‘Colombia’s classroom wars’ in Frontline Latin America – a chance to talk with Colombian students and educators

Between 1999 and 2005, more than half of reported murders of trade unionists in the world happened in Colombia, of whom more than half were working in the education sector. This is in addition to detentions, disappearances, displacements and threats, including against family members.

Protests against cuts in education have led to teachers being branded as ’subversives’, and schools have often been drawn into the war between the guerrilla, state and paramilitary groups.

Opposition to the Uribe government continues in schools and universities. FECODE, the national teachers’ federation is well organized and active. How can we build solidarity in the UK?

London branch meetings of the Colombia Solidarity Campaign take place at 7pm every third Tuesday of the month. http://www.colombiasolidarity.org.uk/

//SACK PARLIAMENT///

Saturday, 23rd May, 12 noon

ALL OF THEM MUST GO. Come and tell the fraudster MPs what you think of them. Bring saucepans, kettles, drums, horns, whistles. We’ve had enough. Our taxes have been ripped off by bankers demanding bailouts for their champagne lifestyles; now the MPs are laughing in our faces with their brazen claims: for moat clearance; grouse-beaters; helipads; swimming pools; fur-lined loo seats; mole-traps; and claims for imaginary mortgages!

The summer of middle-class rage starts now! And working-class rage? you ain’t seen nothing yet! Dress code: Guy Fawkes, the only man ever to enter Parliament with honourable intentions; recommended interpretation: V for Vendetta. Mask only from £4.50, to full costume from £39.99, from UK vendors – see: http://www.google.co.uk/products?q=V+for+Vendetta+costume&scoring=p

//STOP POLICE VIOLENCE///

Saturday, 23rd May 3pm

On Saturday May 23rd 2009, the United Campaign against Police Violence group will be holding a protest march starting from Trafalgar Square, London. This comes after a series of protest that have occurred after the controversial G20 summits. In which a passer by, the police struck Ian Tomlinson, in an unprovoked attack, which caused a huge uproar. Chris Knight, suspended professor at the University of East London and leader of the protest, believes that, ‘ that new labour are trying to impose a police state that nobody wants.’ The march from Trafalgar Square will then go on towards Downing Street, and finally will finish at New Scotland Yard. It will be held between 3pm – 6pm.

ABOUT THE FORD/VISTEON DISPUTE
The workers at Visteon occupied the factory in Enfield on Wednesday 1st April. The previous day, in a 6-minute meeting, they were told that the European company, with plants in Belfast, Basildon and Enfield, was going into administration and that they could come and collect their possessions the next day, with no wages due. They are continuing to maintain a 24-hour picket outside the factory. A deal is being offered, but there are outlying concerns so the struggle continues.

‘Atheism and Feminism’ with Sue Mayer

Sue Mayer will be debating the relationship between atheism and feminism, and remembering the freethinking women who challenged religious sway over civil laws and practices so that women may have the rights they possess today.

The untold story of the feminist movement is that it was sparked and nurtured by women without superstition, by the religious nonconformists and liberals, the unorthodox, the heretics, by the freethinking sceptics, rationalists, agnostic and atheists.

Women of today owe an enormous debt to the freethinking founders and foremothers of the women’s movement who dared question and confront the religious status quo which demand women’s silence, subjection, servitude and unquestioning obedience.

Sue Mayer will be debating the relationship between atheism and feminism, and remembering the freethinking women who challenged religious sway over civil laws and practices so that women may have the rights they possess today.

Sue Mayer is the convenor for London Feminist Freethinkers, a secular feminist group the meets to discuss such issues as where attitudes to women come from, equal representation, pay, pensions and work, women’s role in the family and society, how politics and religion affect women and the family, women’s reproductive rights, autonomy, freedom and equality.

//SATURDAY, JUNE 6th & SUNDAY, JUNE 7TH///

ANARCHIST CONFERENCE ‘09

Queen Mary & Westfield College

As the world economy heads deeper into an unprecedented recession, the spectre of social unrest is again spreading across Europe and the World. In the UK we have experienced an extended holiday from wide-spread class struggle as social democracy and capitalism worked hand in hand to maintain social peace. But as the guarantees of the banks have gone, so too have the guarantees that the state can manage the emerging social conflict, which could potentially turn into social rebellion unseen in the UK for decades.

So, where does that leave the Anarchist Movement? Are we relevant? Do we exist in a form coherent enough to actually be called a movement? Are we progressing? The Anarchist Movement Conference is a chance to put our ideas on the table and rebuild ourselves. The barriers that exist need to be broken down, the experiences and ideas of those involved in anarchist politics need to be shared, discussed, critiqued and debated. The task is urgent, practical and necessary – are we as a movement mature enough to face the challenge?

How and where should we organise? Who are we are speaking to? How do we relate to the wider world as anarchists? These are some of the discussions that might happen during the course of the weekend. We want this conference to be a historical turning point, a point where we manage collectively to come together to look at the problems and work towards the solutions. Anarchists from every federation, network and local group, those involved in diverse struggles from environmental direct-action to community work, trade unionism to DIY projects – we invite you and encourage you: Claim your place at the table and help make a movement!

If we truly aim to be part of making history we need to remake ourselves as an organised, pragmatic movement to become an effective part of revolutionary change. If we do not learn from the mistakes of the past we are doomed to repeat them. The anarchist ideals of mutual aid, solidarity and the desire to live as equals have been echoed throughout our history, in every country, by women and men, regardless of race or ethnicity. We have a proud history, this conference is both about recognizing where we have come from and organizing where we want to go. Be a part of it!

DAVID DOUGLASS ‘THE WHEEL’S STILL IN SPIN’

David Douglass, long-time coal miner, union activist and revolutionary, discusses the period from the end of the 60s to the coming to power of Thatcher.

David Douglass was a pitman for 40 years in the coalfields of the Tyne and in South Yorkshire. This book, the second in his trilogy ‘Stardust and Coaldust’, deals with the period from the end of the 60s to the coming to power of Thatcher. In this 15 year period, dramatic events in the world revolution course around the globe. Dave Douglass transports us back to a time conventional histories have tried to forget or bury or rewrite.

It is a political and social history told by a direct participant in the events, and not from some distant hill of academic neutrality. It has deep and insightful cameos of pit work and the recent history of the Miners Union. Douglass joins up the dots, along with some telling insights into the hidden world of underground labour in its harsh and gritty reality.

Throughout the whole story the air of sexual freedoms, which broke free of constraints in the previous decade survive and prosper. This is a time, when the world was up for grabs, the earth resounded to the world revolutionary impulse. The genii were free from the bottle, and the music was up loud. From where we all stand now, that distant period seems dim and becomes dimmer with every new law and every new brick successive governments have placed on the wall. Soon, they hope, no-one will remember how close we came, to finishing with the whole scumbag system of greed, privilege and power.

Housmans are delighted to welcome long-time coal miner, union activist and revolutionary Dave Douglass to discuss his latest book.

EUROFLASHMOB AGAINST AIRPORT EXPANSION

Saturday 16 May 2009. The day of the Eurovision Song Contest. Join Heathrow Flashmobbers in a Europe-wide Flash Mob – taking place on the same day at 6 airports across Europe.

Flash Heathrow! Flash Paris! Flash Frankfurt! Flash Schipol! Flash Brussels! Flash Dublin!

Each flashmob will be singing Eurovision classics (song-sheets provided), so download your favourite eurovision song onto your ipod or phone and bring your friends, instruments, hats, wigs, and your dancing shoes and let’s party.

Now for the serious bit: airport expansion is seriously bad for local people, increased noise, air pollution, and especially the climate. The aviation industry want to expand airports across the UK and Europe, but opposition is huge, and the scientists are telling us we have to drastically cut emissions if we are to beat climate change. Flashmobs are a fun way to highlight the real opposition there is to expansion at airports across Europe. Here’s another big chance to show our opposition to a 3rd runway at Heathrow.

See you in Heathrow Terminal 1 Departures at 12 noon on the dot!

Tell BAA to get in tune: No Third Runway.

COAL, COLOMBIA AND HUMAN RIGHTS: THE LONDON CONNECTION

7pm – 9pm Tuesday 5 May

London Mining Network and Colombia Solidarity Campaign, in association with Amnesty International UK, invite you to a public meeting at:

The Human Rights Action Centre, Amnesty International UK, 17-25 New Inn Yard, London EC2A 3EA.

The meeting will be in Breakout Room 1 on the main floor.

Community leader Jose Julio Perez and legal representative Armando Perez will speak about the long struggle of the people of Tabaco, Colombia, to obtain a just settlement from the Cerrejon Coal Company after villagers were violently evicted and their homes demolished to make way for mine expansion in 2001.

Cerrejon Coal is owned by three large mining companies listed on the London Stock Exchange: Anglo American, BHP Billiton and Xstrata. Some of the mine’s coal feeds British power stations. The British-based Colombia Solidarity Campaign and allied groups around the world supported the community in its struggle for justice. In December, 2008, the Tabaco Relocation Committee finally signed an agreement with Cerrejon Coal which should lead to the reconstruction of their community and some compensation for their loss.

What are the pros and cons of the agreement signed? What difficulties lie ahead in implementing it? What lessons might be learned by other communities facing relocation to make way for mining projects? What role can solidarity from London-based groups play in helping communities obtain justice from London-based mining companies? Armando and Jose Julio will give their views and initiate a discussion and sharing of experiences.

—– Welfare Reform Bill parliamentary briefing —–

Wednesday 6 May 6.30-8.30 pm
House of Commons, Committee Room 12, Westminster, London SW1
ALL WELCOME Wheelchair access

Deepening our crisis!

Keynote speaker: Oliver James
Child psychologist and author of bestselling Affluenza

“Parents should be given the option of one of them being paid the national average wage while they give up work to care for children.”

Mothers are the world’s first carers and the first line of defence against poverty, illness and other threats to survival. But the work of mothers and other unwaged carers is not valued or economically supported. We are always in crisis but unlike the banks we are never bailed out.

Unless we act now, the Welfare Reform Bill will force many more families into destitution and even criminalisation, and children into neglect.

Jointly hosted by
Baroness Afshar OBE & John McDonnell MP
The Bill treats mothers as “workless”, and whether single or in couples, requires them to seek work or “progress towards work” as a condition of receiving benefit – and to leave their children at an ever earlier age.
The Bill abolishes Income Support, lowers the Carers and Maternity Allowances, and makes “work-related activity” compulsory for every claimant of “working age” – mothers with small children, people over 60, most people with disabilities or ill-health and their full-time carers.
“Work for your benefits” will force mothers and others to work for £1.73 an hour in supermarkets, etc., bypassing and undermining the minimum wage. Mothers are already among the lowest-paid workers.

UK PEACE ACTIVISTS TO STAGE STRIKE PROTEST IN SUPPORT OF TAMILS

From 10am all day, Wednesday 29 April, Parliament Square, London

Peace activists will be “On Strike Against Genocide” tomorrow in support of the of the British Tamil community whose relatives are under siege in Sri Lanka. Peace Strike is calling on people to respond to the emergency situation in Sri Lanka by taking the day off work, nursery, school, college and university and to gather in Westminster.

Tamil protestors have been in Parliament Square since early April to bring attention to the plight of their people in Tamil Eelam caught up in the military assault by the Sri Lanka Government. Most protesters have relatives who have been seriously injured or killed.

Parameswaran Subramanivan, a 28 year old student on ³hunger strike till death², has lost 10 immediate family members. Doctors have warned that the Tamil student, on hunger strike in Parliament Square for 22 days in protest at the Sri Lankan governments military assault, may have only a week to live. (1)

Maria Gallastegui from Peace Strike said, ŒThousands of Tamil women, children, men, students, young and old have kept up a constant presence in Parliament Square in all weathers, for over 3 weeks. We have been constantly asking British Government officials to discuss the situation and have been absolutely shocked by the indifference to every attempt. The Genocide Prevention All Party Parliamentary Group said they were not interested, and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office have not replied to our emails. It is disgusting how the Tamils in Britain are being ignored.¹
